In the Hip Hop world of today, everyone that picks up a microphone refers to themselves as an artist. But many lack the true ability to paint a picture with words or bring out the emotions of their listeners. Luckily for the Screwface Army Devinwade does not fall into this category. With mind blowing metaphors hidden within shockingly controversial subject matter, Devinwade’s no holds barred approach to the craft is an undeniable force to be reckoned with. With a long list of street battle victories and a 2001 quotable in The Source Magazine’s Unsigned Hype, Devinwade has continued to touch fans of his music and create a large buzz for himself and his fellow artist as Vice President of SFMG.
Growing up in Camden, New Jersey, a city overrun with criminals, murder, and drugs (hence the nickname CMD), Devin has always known he was destined for greater things. With recruitment on the rise he never fell into the hands of CMD’s popular gangs, even if it meant fist fighting everyday for his independence. Raised in the home of his aunt who he refers to as “mommy”, he witnessed a lot through her crack addiction and wild street lifestyle. Still in all the ups and downs she remains a major influence on his personality, and is a burning fuel for his music today.
Even while spitting about real world issues like war, STDs, abortion and racism he always delivers sarcastic punch lines and humorous wordplay. With super-producers Traxx Trigga and J. Notiq by his side, Devinwade and the FlyBoyz are certain to make music history.
How did you choose your name?
I was born with it so I guess there couldn’t be a better name out there to describe me. Thanks Mom! (smiling)
How would you define your style?
My style is Me on Music, Say whatever I want lyrics. If I think it I say it. Nobody believes it but I learned how to rap listening to rappers that most people I know thinks sucks like Prodigy and Killarmy. And they’re my personal favorite rappers. (laughs)
How did you get down with Screwface?
I was about to overpay for some beats from this other producer when somebody in his studio mentioned Traxx’s name and a discussion started about him being the best producer around. Naturally I went out and found him and learned that not only were his beats better but they were cheaper too! After losing a record deal I was about to give up rapping and move down south, Traxx came to me asked me to get down with the Screwface Family. The rest is history!
What would you like to be doing in 10 years?
Man as long as I’m healthy and got a little bit of paper I’m good. I just wanna still be inserting my penis into the greatest women on earth. I mean that for the next 30 years! Besides that I wanna still be in the army making big things happen on ya TV and Movie Screens, till death or the end of the world!
What do you think about the state of the industry? :
It sucks and its great at the same time. The south got it on smash and I aint mad at that. I think they making better shit right now. It also sucks because there’s no more artist development anymore just lucky cats and one hit wonders. I think its time for the world to hear some real long lasting talent for a change, talent that The Fly Boyz can provide.
Why should people buy your album?
First and Foremost because it’s a great album! I challenge anyone to listen to it and say otherwise. You gotta be smoking crack to say that Fly Boyz shit sucks. Either that or you mad because one of us Mr. Marcus’d your girl, wife, baby momz or sister! (laughs)
What’s it like making the transitions between being a rapper, photographer, and graphic artist?
There’s really no transition cus they’re all me. Thanks to God I was born with skills and intelligence that have nothing to do with me. I’m an artist like Michelangelo, not the orange ninja turtle! (laughs) I’m all about creativity. The part that sucks is that me being an artist, I tend to get my point across better through art. Because of this it’s sometimes harder to communicate peacefully in a regular conversation. Also, since it’s very difficult to be dishonest as an artist we all tend to tell on ourselves in our music. Sometimes you gotta get shit of your chest ya know…
How did being from Camden influence you as an artist?:
For me it made me fearless. I know that you can get killed at any moment and that’s it your dead. I t can come at anytime so why be shook? It also let me experience real hate. I’m talking the kind of hate where not only do people want to see you do bad, they want to see you die. They will find something bad to say about you no matter what. Even if you’re good they’ll say something like, “Fuck Dev he ain’t never sold no drugs!” And they are correct, that’s why I don’t rap about that shit. My Mom said Fuck Dem Niggas!
